What is the difference between corporate design and branding?

Corporate design is the visual component of branding: logo, typography, color palette, design system and brand guidelines. Branding additionally encompasses brand strategy, positioning, messaging framework, tone of voice and brand experience. Corporate design makes visible what brand strategy defines. Without a strategic foundation, corporate design remains decoration. With strategy, it becomes a growth driver. Corporate design vs. corporate identity — what is the difference?

Corporate design (CD) encompasses the visual elements of your brand: logo, typography, color system, design system and brand guidelines. Corporate identity (CI) is the overarching concept and, beyond corporate design, also includes corporate communication (language, tone of voice), corporate behavior (company culture, conduct) and corporate culture. When is it time to modernize your corporate design?

It is time to modernize your corporate design when one or more of these signals apply: your visual identity does not work on digital touchpoints (social media, mobile, web), your audience has shifted and the design no longer speaks to them, new competitors look fresher and more modern, your design system has become inconsistent (too many interpretations across teams), or your offering has evolved and the design does not reflect that. Can we update individual elements only (e.g. just the logo)?

Yes. Not every brand needs a complete redesign. Sometimes a targeted brand refresh of individual elements is enough to modernize the brand: a logo redesign, an updated color system or expanding the design system for new digital touchpoints.
